Fimo Teeth Tutorial by invader-gir Fimo Teeth Tutorial by invader-gir
After making my first set of Fimo teeth for a possible Viral costume I may make in the future I thought I would put together a tutorial for anyone else looking to try their hand at it.

*EDIT*

:iconfimofemale: commented below with a tip that may come in handy if the color ends up unnaturally white.

"i have a little tip for anyone reading this, to give your teeth that realistic look ad a tiny (AND I MEAN TINY) amount of tan clay, yellow, and an even smaller amount of black, it looks really good, i have tried something similair to this where i made single teeth and matched them to my teeth shade..."

I've made them before, and done right, they'll stay on well. But you'll have a lisp when talking xD i find it very fun to talk with a lisp!

Let me just say that, though this is really old, I think this is a really bad idea. I don't think it would be safe to put clay in your mouth, especially when it is unbaked, even if you do wash your mouth out.

Yeah, that's what i use. And it gives you a lisp but it might not be noticeable, it depends on the person. And i've only done it with the top teeth, but i'm pretty sure you can do it with the bottom teeth as well :3

OMG this is exactly what I needed I LOVE you for this bro! 2 Questions though. 1) Where can you buy the clay and the knife?(Ben Franklin's?). 2) Can you use paint to make the teeth look yellowish instead of tan/yellow clay?

You can buy Fimo and an X-Acto knife at Craft Stores. Walmart doesn't carry Fimo, but they carry x-acto knives. Paint I do not suggest because I think it's toxic and if it flakes... oh god.

This, also, NO.
Air Dry clay is terrible, especially for cosplaying. It gives off a powdery residue after drying and is just terrible. It also crumbles as well as probably not safe. >w<

So yeah, stay away from that. You can go to probably any craft store and Fimo is under $5. The only thing that clay is good for is art projects for younger kids.

will the teeth stay on your mouth or will you need to use some kind of glue. god this sounds like a dimb question.

Its not dumb at all! When covering the front and back of the tooth glue will be unnecessary since they should slide over your actual teeth. If the fit is right they should stay in place.

I heard fimo is toxic and doctors said dont make it as ear-plugs kinda, i wonder if its ok for teeth then....

Its not good to ingest it (swallow it) but it is sold through Europe as a children's toy for young children and one of the testing guidelines is for ingestion. Their formula had to be changed a few years back to comply with the regulations.

do you have to seal it or something, or is the fimo non-toxic?
Reply
:iconinvader-gir:
invader-gir Featured By Owner Oct 21, 2012
Most things that would bond with fimo are more toxic than the clay itself. Most of the toxicity comes from the oil used when in a pliable form. When baked its cooked off to harden it. That said, the toxicity is low enough that it is sold as a children's toy which there are tests for ingesting it in raw form.

I have a question? do you have a Canine tooth that is oddly grown? Just wondering because on picture 11 it looks exactly like mine did when I made soul eater teeth and I have the oddly grown Canine...if not then please diregaurd this question and good job on te teeth you made (^A^)

Sort of, both of my canines are large, or at least wide. The one on my right thats more pronounced is also because it forced out the tooth in front of it when I was a teen. Its also not as rounded down as its twin because it shifted over into a spot that doesn't rub the bottom teeth as much. Also my top row of teeth are slightly off centered as well from it but its not enough to be noticeable, I didn't notice until a couple years ago when I realized my top and bottom teeth don't line up.

I do have to compliment you on your good eye there.

Well I Have that problem with my teeth, which is why I have to make custom teeth or fangs for cosplay rather than just use a crappy pair of fangs from a drug store. The canine on my right has pushed the smaller tooth back and my right canine came forward making it impossible to wear individual fangs, I just noticed it on your picture because it caught my attention looking similar to the teeth I made I was just curious is all (' A ')
Once again wanted to give my thoughts on a good job that you did and fill my curiosity meter for the day.

*highfive for odd teeth things*

The kits that are sold for individual fangs actually has a paste or clay with it you use for sizing. I bought a pair though haven't used it yet, but I'm not worried so much about them fitting as I am the one side looking crammed or odd because the tooth is sitting over 2 teeth to make it even with the other one.

-High five-

I have tried a couple of kits and they didn't really want to work with my mouth but I was probably just doing it wrong XD

Can you use regular clay for this, or would that be a foolish idea?

I apologize but, I really can't give a good answer on this since each clay has its own chemical composition and may or may not react well to the same process.

This tutorial seems good but I think I did something wrong at step 11.. I'm probably gonna sound stupid but I used the base as a mould for sculpting the new teeth but the new teeth didn't come out in one clean piece and it ruined the base so i threw it all out. I'm not giving up yet so I'll attempt this again but is there any advice you can give so that I don't fail at this again?
Thank you~~

If I'm reading your question correctly it sounds like you did do it correctly. One of the issues you may be having is once you bake it the second time it'll usually adhere too well to the original base piece to come off if you make a mistake. Also if you're grip is too tight on the original piece it could warp the shape and throw your fit off.

In what way did it ruin your base? Is it a problem of it fitting over your real teeth or is it a different issue? Also there are 2 things about this, you do want to try to stay as thin as possible without being too thin to keep shape (something that can easily be a challenge) and also once fimo is completely hardened you can actually cut and shape them using an xacto knife and sandpaper. Just make sure if you do use sandpaper to sand it as smooth as possible and clean it thoroughly before using, I have a cheap toothbrush I used to scrub my first set. It may be considered a children's toy in Europe but you still want to avoid ingesting any of the clay.

You said these were for short term use? Do you know of anyway to make them last about a day?
